Aachen – imperial city, spa and equestrian town
Located approximately 10 km from the hotel is the old imperial city of Aachen, offering a first-rate World Heritage Site with its cathedral. The central-plan building of the cathedral was constructed approximately 1,200 years ago by Charlemagne, who had chosen the imperial palace of Aachen as the centre of his huge empire.
Aachen, however, has much more to offer than venerable sights. Every year it hosts a number of events that attract international interest from far beyond the region. First of all, we should mention the award of the “International Charlemagne Prize”, one of the most renowned European awards for better co-operation in Europe, secondly the annual CHIO – the World Equestrian Festival – in the summer, and thirdly, the award of the “Orden wider den tierischen Ernst” at the start of the year, one of Germany’s most famous carnival awards.
Particularly worthy of mention is RWTH Aachen University, which has an excellent international reputation in many specialist areas and whose many students contribute to the exuberant life in this spa town.
